If you are diligent about maintaining good eye health, you can easily prevent eye problems. They are practical and simple to do, but they are often the most overlooked.

These are the things you need to do daily to maintain your eyesight and eye health.

1. Avoid rubbing your eyes.
Hands are often exposed to dirt, bacteria, and dust. These can easily transfer to your peepers by touching them or rubbing them. Avoid putting your hands on your eyes to avoid irritation. You should get rid of the habit as soon as you can.

2. Regular hand washing is a good idea.
Hands are constantly exposed to bacteria, dirt, and dust throughout the day. This can easily transfer to your eyes by touching or rubbing them. You can avoid this by washing your hands often and avoiding any contact with your eyes. The reduction of germs around the eyes can be achieved by cleaning contacts lenses and glasses.

3. Protect your eyes against the sun.
The sun and UV rays increase the risk of age-related macular disease. They can also cause photokeratitis and cornea sunburn. You can make a fashion statement by wearing sunglasses. They will also protect your eyes. Contact lenses and UV-protected sunglasses are also available. Also, wearing caps, visors, or hats is a good idea.

4. Hydrate.
A healthy body requires adequate fluid intake. Your eyes will not become dry or irritated if you keep them hydrated.

5. Don’t smoke.
Smoking can make you more vulnerable to cataracts and age-related macular damage. Smoking can cause optic nerve damage, which can adversely affect your vision over time.

6. A balanced diet is important.
It is surprising how helpful diets are when it comes to practicing daily eye care. Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges, protects your eyes from diseases and infections. Zinc and other minerals are plentiful in eggs, dark berries, and grapes. The improvement in eyesight is also associated with carrots. These carotenoid colors are made up of beta-carotene (lutein), and lycopene. Vitamin A is then broken down to protect the eyes from UVB and sun damage. Antioxidants and other nutrients are found in leafy green vegetables, such as spinach, cabbage, and kale, which protect the eyes from problems like cataracts. Fish such as salmon and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can improve brain function and memory. Look out for foods that are rich in important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants next time you’re grocery shopping to improve your eyesight.

7. Be sure to maintain proper monitor distances and adjust the room lighting.
Computer monitors should be at least an arm’s reach from the eyes, and 20 degrees below the eye level. This prevents your eyes from becoming a strain. You should also ensure adequate, but diffused lighting in the room. A room with too bright and focused light can create glare which can be too stressful on the eyes.

8. Use the correct kind of eye makeup.
Choose the best brands for your make-up. Eyeliners, mascara, and eye shadows that cause allergic reactions can be avoided. Make sure to remove any makeup before going to bed to prevent bacteria build-up. You should also clean your brushes frequently, especially those used for applying eye makeup.

9. Get enough sleep.
Like the rest of your body, your eyes also need to recharge. This happens while you are sleeping. You need to get enough rest each night to keep your eyes healthy.

10. You should always wear appropriate eye safety gear when participating in different activities.
No matter what, ensure that your eyes are protected. To protect your eyes from chlorine, goggles should be worn if you are going swimming. To protect your eyes from dirt particles, bacteria, and injury, wear safety glasses if you are gardening or working on a DIY project.

11. Keep your surroundings clean.
Eye irritation can be caused by dust and dirt being exposed to the eyes. Make sure to change your linens and towels frequently and keep your workstation clean.

12. Give Your Eyes a Break
Eye muscles need rest to function properly. You can improve the function of your eyes if you work all day on a computer. Doctors suggest the 20-20-20 Rule break up your workday and help relax your eyes. You should look away from your computer screen every 20 minutes and fix your eyes on an object at least 20 feet away. Keep your eyes moistened by blinking 20 times apiece. You can maintain your body’s health by changing the scenery and allowing it to rehydrate.
