Did you ever wonder how an architect designs a winning building or how a fashion designer creates fashionable clothing that everyone wants? All designs must be creative. Finding inspiration can sometimes prove difficult. In some ways, all of us are design professionals. To be a professional designer, you don’t need to design an automobile, write novels, or create beautiful sculptures. Each day, we are all challenged to think, dream and collaborate with others. This allows us to become creative every day.
1. To let your mind roam, find a new spot:
It can be difficult for many designers to find a new spot to spark their creativity. You may be stuck in your ways, or have trouble thinking of new ideas. Creativity is often stifled by a lack of stimulation. Look out from your living room and open the curtains to let in light and allow you to explore new places. If you’re unable to leave the comfort of your own home, then surf the internet or read a book and let it inspire you.
2. Encourage creativity in the outdoors
Nature is full of life, and you can find inspiration in any form. You can visit a park nearby, take a stroll around your home and bring a camera. The best way to capture nature on film can be used as a design inspiration. Grab some gardening tools to help you plant flowers instead of wandering through your garden. It is the best way to express your creativity than in the natural world.
3. Your home office should have a new purpose
Take a look at the space in your home if you are a designer looking for inspiration. You can use it as a painting or woodworking studio, or even your kitchen. It’s inspiring! You can decorate your workspace with pictures of your goals, and fill your bookshelves full of books you are eager to read. Your workspace is a reflection of you. Make it exciting and rich in color, patterns, textures to encourage more of your senses.
4. Take a vacation to enjoy, and not only for work.
Have you ever taken a vacation for the pure joy and adventure of discovering a new place or city? Inspirational designers can travel to find more ideas. You can find inspiration in new cultures, people, geography, and music. You don’t have to put off that dream of cruising the globe, so grab your car and get out there!
5. Inspire yourself with creative play and play areas for children
As children, there were many opportunities to express our creativity. You can display your artwork at school or make pottery by hand. The same idea can be used to keep your adult creative brain active and energized. Create a playroom, or space for you to create, doodle, and be imaginative.
6. Keep your ideas documented when you feel the need
You don’t want to go through your day having been inspired by something and then forget it when you get back to your craft. Keep your life documented. You’ll be amazed at the number of ideas that are lost in your day. These ideas can then be used to your advantage in your daily work life.
7. Your work and yourself should be able to laugh at times
As adults mature, they lose their sense of humor. Creativity doesn’t need to be about discipline. In fact, your mind may forget the rules and come up with creative ideas.
8. Get inspired by visual dissecting of one element
A simple way to allow your brain to generate creative ideas is to choose one element (e.g. a vintage clock, or a brightly colored chair) and let your mind focus on the design elements that make it different. You will find creativity in all parts of your world if you do this daily practice of analyzing and dissecting.
9. Collaboration with your peers
If you need creative inspiration, reach out to your colleagues and coworkers. Even though you may believe you have the same experiences, there’s nothing better than working together. Meet up at your favorite place or in the design office, and have a “think session”.
